BRAD RIDES HIGH ON HOPE: You can find Brad every Saturday morning riding on HOPE at the Shea Center, in more ways than one. Hope is the name of the horse Brad rides every week. But hope is also what he experiences in life because he has the privilege of riding at the Shea Center. Brad was born with a partial deletion of his 13th chromosome, causing global delays and disabilities. The chromosome deletion also led to two different types of cancer and epilepsy. Before Brad’s 5th birthday he had gone through nearly 3 years of chemotherapy and radiation treatments. It was during the long hospital stays, through the power of books and pictures, that Brad fell in love with horses and farm animals. So arriving at the Shea Center as a young child was truly a dream come true… because at Shea, Brad learned to ride a horse. On the back of a horse, Brad was transformed from a sick child with poor balance and low muscle tone, to a real horseman. And while Brad was doing what he loved, therapeutic riding was strengthening his muscles and improving his balance and cognitive function. Life has always been full of challenges for Brad, but the Shea Center has filled him with hope and blessed him with the ability to do what he loves- ride a horse. This year he perfected his posting trot. He continues to learn new skills each week and has gained confidence and pride that translates to every other area of Brad’s life. Thank you for your donations, which make it possible for Brad and others with disabilities to experience hope for everyday life. Thank you also to the incredible Shea center staff and volunteers for pouring instruction, love and encouragement into Brad, helping him to ride high on Hope.
