Lauren loves all animals but horses are one of her favorites. She has been riding at the Shea Center for years and loves it just as much today as she did the very first time. Lauren has Rett Syndrome and because of it is unable to walk independently, she is also unable to speak and has a hard time using her hands. She has seizures, scoliosis, breathing abnormalities and GI issues. When she's on the horse she doesn't have to think about all that, she can just enjoy herself, she's just a young lady riding her horse with her friends. It's so much more than that though, riding makes her proud, she's able to move and have some independence, she is sometimes able to use her hands, she communicates with sounds and smiles. Riding helps to make her stronger which is great for the scoliosis and most likely one of the reasons it isn't worse. The Shea Center and the amazing staff and volunteers have been an important part of Lauren's life, please help to make sure they are around for years to come!
