A Mighty Man Tristan

My sweet Tristan has been riding now at The Shea Center for over 4.5 years. Born at a very early gestational age of 26 weeks and weighing a mere 1 lb 9 ounces he has proven himself to be quite a fighter! Despite a clean bill of health after being released from the NICU, within two short years Tristan started suffering from seizures and was soon diagnosed with cerebral palsy, epilepsy and established to be globally delayed. Recently, Tristan has also been diagnosed with autism, CMT 1A, and 9P- Deletion Syndrome. Most heartbreaking of all is that the little walking capability Tristan possesses now will be as good as it gets; his skill will degenerate over time. We feel extremely blessed to have been able to ride at the Shea Center for the past 4.5 years. One of Tristan favorite things to do during a week full of therapies is to ride his horses. I believe he feels free from his cerebral palsy, to be outside on his horse together bonding. Tristan has met many milestones at the Shea Center. With speech therapy I've been able to watch Tristan go from speaking one word to saying 5 word sentences! Tristan first 5 word sentence was at the Shea Center during his speech therapy. As his mother it was such a beautiful thing to witness and to hear for the first time. Tristan has gone from a child that refused to talk to asking to go to the barn as well as singing to his therapist and side walkers. Tristan's social skills have grown tremendously. Tristan wants to engage in answering his speech therapist when she holds up flash cards. What a difference this therapy has made in our lives to communicate a bit easier with him. With physical therapy at the Shea Center Tristan has made great strides! He used to not be cooperative when getting on the horse but now he loves his therapy time. Tristan has a huge smile when we pull up to the Shea Center. The therapy on the horse has help him walk better with his walker, as well as his posture is better, and he has great body control. I love to see how happy Tristan is riding at the Shea Center. Tristan flashes that smile of his every chance he gets. We love the Shea Center and are excited to see how Tristan will continue to meet more milestones for the years to come. Thank you, Sheila Straub
