Share A Splendid Experience
I have been volunteering at the Shea center for just about two years now. Before I started at the Shea Center, I had been riding horses for around 2 years. I stopped riding due to the fact that my favorite horse at the time, a Quarter Horse named Belle, passed. I didn't feel comfortable riding there anymore but I still wanted a horsey experience, so I remembered the place I discovered when I was 12, the Shea Center. I was now old enough to apply as a volunteer! I attended all of the orientations and became a volunteer in March. Right away I felt welcomed and feel in love with all of the horses. After about 2 months
of being a volunteer, I found Splendid, a Dutch Warmblood. I felt drawn to him so I asked to pull him for his lesson, the LTA (a staff member in charge of the barn) agreed, but told me he could be a handful. I went into his stall to pull him and found out that he was a cribber (which basically means he bites on his stall as a way to deal with stress), once I took him out of his stall and started grooming him, I fell in love! I also suffer from an anxiety disorder so I felt a certain bond with him I had never felt with any horse before. Many LTA's have told me Splendid does better around me too :). Going to the Shea Center also helps me with my
anxiety. I hope you choose to help by donating to the Shea center so more people can experience the same as I do.
